Puerto Galera ("PG") one of the oldest Spanish settlements in the Philippines was found in 1572, Puerto Galera was the first provincial capital of Mindoro Island situated on Northern Peninsula of the Island, approximately 160 Km from Manila early as the 10th century, Chinese, Malay and Indonesian Merchants were already doing business with local traders and Puerto Galera is where they replenished their provisions.
Puerto Galera (Port of the Galleons) was an excellent port for Spanish Galleons seeking refuge from heavy storm and typhoon and even today, yachts cruising the South China Sea stop there.
Mindoro Island separated from the Island of Luzon by the Verde Passage can only be reached by boat of Helicopter. Waters are flushed by the currents of South China Sea, resulting in strong currents up to 6 knots.
Now the good old days are gone and the Galleon days all over the so often portrait scenic view of a hassling and bustling port has change dramatically. Due to the clear waters around Puerto Galera, and in part due to its rather good accessibility and proximity to Manila, Puerto Galeara evoled into a tourist destination over the past quarter century. Today Puerto Galera is known for its world class scuba diving, but not only scuba diving has flourished - numerous other adventure activities are being offered from golf to kayaking, hiking and windsurfing or just simple beach-bumming. Puerto Galera has something to offer anyone interested in outdoor activities.
Puerto Galera declared a "Man and the Biosphere Reserve" by UNESCO, in 1984, because fo the outstanding natural beauty around, above, as well as beneath the water. |
